Hoosier haute cuisine sets up house in the former Dodd's
When Dodd's Townhouse packed up its cast-iron skillets and chocolate-chip pie resipe for good in 2006, it was hard to imagine the rambling Meridian-Kessler institution as anything else. But we're adjusting—now that upscale comfort foods (like steak with signature sauces and lobster pot pie) fill the menu at Meridian, the restaurant that has taken over the hallowed spot. The interior has been completely revamped with dark wood and high ceilings that, in the words of general manager and executive chef Dan Dunville (pictured), "make you feel like you should leave your skis outside and come in to warm up." Tne new lodge-like space even incorporated some of the 127-year-old building's original log-cabin walls, planed down and stained to match the rest of the decor. Other than that, Dunville (whose restaurant experience here includes stints at the northside Ruth's Chris Steak House, Dunaway's Palazzo Ossigeno, and Broad Ripple Steakhouse) has tried to distance his restaurant from its former self. "The only thing of Dodd's that remains at Meridian," he says, "is the birdhouse hanging outside in the tree."
